DOOR DASH/Isaiah Summers’ runner beats buzzer, sends Greenwood past Purples, 84-82

GATORS COMPLETE TWO-GAME SWEEP OF BOWLING GREEN; LADY PURPLES SHACKLE GREENWOOD, 51-28

Greenwood High School’s Isaiah Summers didn’t have time to think.

Didn’t have time to do much of anything.

Except sprint down the floor.

“When we get a fast-break opportunity,” Summers said, “the guys tell me, ‘Get ahead.’ I had to get to the basket … I saw the clock, as I got the ball …”

With about a second left, in the Gators’ critical KHSAA 14th District showdown with crosstown rival Bowling Green High School …

And …

“It wasn’t the best angle … but it felt good coming out of my hands,” Summers said. “I wasn’t uncomfortable, taking that shot …”

That’s what it took, for Greenwood to claim a two-game sweep of the Purples, after Summers’ stunner beat Bowling Green, 84-82, on Monday night at The Swamp.

Greenwood, a young squad with just three seniors — including Summers, a 6-foot-3 swingman — improved to 17-4 overall and 3-2 in 14th District play. The Gators’ seeding for the district tournament later this month, at Warren Central, has yet to be determined, but they know they won’t be playing in the dreaded 1-vs.-4 game, to open the tournament.

Against the homestanding Dragons, who are the Commonwealth’s seventh-ranked team in the latest statewide poll from the Courier-Journal in Louisville.

Warren Central (15-2 overall, 3-1 in the 14th) will play host to South Warren (13-5, 2-2) on Tuesday night, with the RPI possibly coming into play for the seeding for the district tournament.

Will McCoy, Greenwood’s sixth-year head coach, said Summers is perfect for the “scramble mode,” a live ball in the final seconds of a tie game. Bowling Green tried to hold the ball for the last shot of regulation, but the Purples put it up in time for Greenwood’s Ethan York to get the rebound, before finding teammate Martell Tuttle just past mid-court.

Beat the clock, win the game.

“Man, that was exciting,” Tuttle said outside the Greenwood locker room after the game. “I knew Isaiah was going to be in that spot … we just had to push it up the court.”

It was a memorable buzzer beater, to be sure, and the Greenwood student section poured onto the court to celebrate the hard-earned victory.

Bowling Green, a young team with plenty of potential, dropped to 11-10 overall and 1-4 in district play. Before Winter Storm Fern, which delayed the 14th District schedule for TEN DAYS, the Purples seemed to have hit their stride, striking for a 65-59 overtime victory over Warren Central in the BGHS Arena.

BGHS forward Anthony Davis, a 6-foot-4 freshman forward, led all scorers with 21 points on Monday night. Davis, the starting quarterback for the Purples’ tradition-rich football squad, hit a variety of shots in the paint, including a deft field goal off the glass after BGHS teammate Hudson Aikins came up with a steal on the inbounds pass under his own basket.

Bowling Green was haunted by some missed free throws in the second half, however, and the Gators would tie the game at 82 on Ethan York’s two foul shots with 15.9 seconds left in the game.

“I thought Anthony Davis was the best player on the court tonight,” BGHS coach D.G. Sherrill said, “but Greenwood’s a good basketball team. It seems like we’re right on everybody’s heels … We had three opportunities to win the game in the last minute or so …

“We lost them a few times in transition. We kind of gave that one away tonight. We’ve got to beat South Warren on Friday night. We’ll see what happens Tuesday (when South tangles with Warren Central) … We’ve got to hope it can come down to RPI, for the (district tournament) seeding.”

Bowling Green is on the road Tuesday night, facing an Owensboro High School squad struggling with a 2-14 overall record. Greenwood will be playing across town, against Owensboro Catholic (11-8 overall), at the Owensboro Sports Center.

Greenwood coach Will McCoy was pleased Summers knew what to do with the game on the line.

“I saw Isaiah got a little head of steam and found the glass,” McCoy said. “He’s a guy who can make difficult shots. Our guys just didn’t quit. I was really proud of them tonight.

“I’m still not sure what happened.”

Junior forward Martell Tuttle led the Gators with 20 points, while Summers finished with 17. Ethan York, a 6-foot-3 sophomore, kept the Purples honest from the 3-point line while scoring 14 points. Junior guard Brayden Kennedy hit a couple critical 3-point field goals while adding 10 points.

Anthony Davis led the Purples with 21 points, and sophomore BGHS guard Hudson Aikins added 18 points. Purples guard Braylon Anderson had the hot hand in the first half, finishing with 14 points, while freshman guard Tre Thomas finished with 13.

“In the last three minutes, we had three freshmen, a sophomore and a junior out there,” BGHS coach D.G. Sherrill said.

Bowling Green, the KHSAA Sweet 16 runner-up in 2025, has had an up-and-down season, but the Purples still have seven regular-season games remaining before the district tournament.

Greenwood’s Will McCoy was just happy to put this one in the books.

“We had a list of goals before the season,” McCoy said, “and this was the first one. Getting locked out of the 1-4 game. We don’t know what’s going to happen, moving forward, but we know we’ve avoided that. The 1 and the 2 (seeds), they’re still up for grabs.

“We’re going to go over there (to Warren Central) Friday night and try to continue to play fearless basketball. Team basketball. If we can pull that one off, we’ll just let the math play out its course, with the RPI stuff (for seeding purposes). We’re really proud of this team tonight.”

BOWLING GREEN GIRLS 51, GREENWOOD 28

Bowling Green remained unbeaten in five KHSAA 14th District games, winning its third straight before Tuesday night’s home game against Owensboro High School. The Lady Devils are 6-11 overall and 2-9 in the KHSAA’s Third Region.

The Lady Purples’ defense kept Greenwood in check for most of the first half, taking a 27-18 lead into the locker room at the break. In the second half, Bowling Green pulled away from the Lady Gators, getting 11 players in the scoring column before the game came to a close.

Sophomore Jooniper Strow, a transfer from South Warren, led the Lady Purples with 11 points. Junior guard Maddie Davenport finished with 10 points, while BGHS teammate Amayah Brown added nine.

Freshman guard Anzlee Hendrix led the Lady Gators with 10 points, while teammate Molly Spidel added nine. Greenwood (9-10, 3-2 in the KHSAA’s 14th District) is on the road Tuesday night to tangle with Daviess County.

“Defensively, we did a real good job tonight,” BGHS coach Calvin Head said. “It was a collective effort, offensively … It’s going to take seven or eight of our girls to score some points, for us to be at our best.”
