South Warren ranked second among KHSAA Class 5A football squads

South Warren High School’s football team, which plays host to Bowling Green in a critical KHSAA 1st Region, District 2-5A play on Friday, was ranked No. 2 in The Associated Press’ weekly statewide poll released Monday.

The Spartans (4-1) have won three straight games, all by decisive margins, since dropping a 27-20 decision to Hendersonville (Tennessee) on August 27 at South Warren.

South Warren trails only Lexington’s Frederick Douglass High School in the Class 5A rankings. Bowling Green High School, the defending KHSAA Class 5A champion, were among the other teams receiving votes (21 points), followed by Greenwood (13).

Frederick Douglass received 10 of 11 first-place votes, with the other first-place vote going to Owensboro High School, which checks in at No. 3 in the 5A rankings.

In Class 4A, Logan County (4-2) remained at No. 6 in the AP rankings, while Glasgow moved from sixth to fourth in the Class 3A rankings following an impressive 37-16 road victory over Greenwood. Bardstown (5-0) is the No. 1 ranked Class 3A squad.

In Class 2A, Metcalfe County (4-2) is the state’s eighth-ranked team, while Butler County (4-1) checks in at No. 10.
