QUICK HITTER STORY/Eli Hawkins ignites Logan County in 27-17 victory over South Warren

COUGARS IMPROVE TO 9-1, WILL WAIT ON ALLEN COUNTY-SCOTTSVILLE FOR 4A PLAYOFFS

Logan County’s football team is for real.

Junior running back/linebacker Eli Hawkins scored two touchdowns in the final minute of the first half, and the Cougars stormed back to knock off homestanding South Warren 27-17.

South Warren, the defending KHSAA Class 5A state champion, led 17-0 when Hawkins struck first.

Logan County tailback Ryan Rayno broke off a 10-yard run before losing the ball on a fumble at the 2-yard line, and it squirted into the end zone, where Hawkins made the recovery for the Cougars’ first points of the night.

Moments later, Hawkins intercepted a pass from South Warren’s Bryce Batton and scored on a 20-yard return, with just 17 seconds left in the half. The Spartans’ Ethan Reynolds blocked the extra-point attempt, however, and South still led 17-13 at halftime.

In the second half, Logan County’s Davin Yates found teammate Harper Butler on a crossing pattern that covered 16 yards for the Cougars’ third touchdown. Yates scored the final touchdown himself, on a 1-yard run with 8:22 left in the game.

Logan County improved to 9-1 overall and will play host to Allen County-Scottsville (3-7) next week in first-round play of the KHSAA Class 4A playoffs.

South Warren dropped its second straight game and the Spartans will take a 5-5 record into its Class 5A playoff opener on the road against Graves County.

I’ll have complete coverage on the game in the morning. Thanks for reading.
