QUICK HITTER STORY/Lofton Howard sparks Greenwood to 41-28 victory over Glasgow

WARREN CENTRAL WINS AGAIN; BOWLING GREEN SLIPS PAST FATHER RYAN 46-45

GLASGOW — Momma said there’d be days like this.

Or nights, as the case may be.

I’ve had all sorts of digital issues over the last 4, 5 hours, and someone who has hacked one of my social media accounts pretty much made my life a living hell before I was able to get back on the road to return to Bowling Green.

I covered Greenwood’s 41-28 victory over the Glasgow Scotties at Hank Royse Stadium, which gives Coach William Howard’s team a 5-1 record entering district play.

The Gators will square off with Christian County in KHSAA, Class 5A, 2nd District play on Thursday night at the Stadium of Champions in Hopkinsville. Christian County improved to 2-4 on the season Friday night, knocking off Murray High School 34-20.

Greenwood took a 27-21 lead into halftime, and the Gators were able to finish the task at hand with big offensive plays and a steady pass rush in the second half. Senior Lofton Howard, named his team’s MVP by a game sponsor in Glasgow, finished the game at quarterback as the Gators were clicking out of the Wildcat formation.

Howard also scored the game’s biggest touchdown in the opening moments of the fourth quarter.

The 6-foot-5, 215-pound WKU commit took the snap from center in the Wildcat set, found a hole inside and cut toward the left sideline to complete a 39-yard touchdown run with 8:23 left in the game. That put the Gators in front 35-21, and the Greenwood defense was equal to the task.

The Gators’ special teams produced their first touchdown, as Greenwood’s Elmo Stewart blocked a Glasgow punt before teammate Jarred Brock scored on a 6-yard return. That score tied the game at 7 in the first quarter.

There was no shortage of penalties and officials’ meetings in the second half, which prolonged the affair. Greenwood avenged last year’s 37-16 loss to the Scotties last year at The Swamp.

It was a big night for South Central Kentucky football, as Bowling Green High School slipped past Father Ryan Academy 46-45 in Nashville, while South Warren knocked off Louisville’s Central High School 24-0.

The Spartans (3-2) and archrival Bowling Green (5-1) will tangle on Friday night at the BGHS campus. Warren East remained unbeaten in six games with a 35-14 victory over Wayne County, while Warren Central improved to 2-0 in district play with a decisive 36-9 victory over Russell County.

Warren Central, 3-2 overall, travels across town to scrap with Warren East (6-0) on Friday night.

Butler County stopped previously unbeaten McLean County 27-12, lifting the Bears to a 5-0 record overall. Metcalfe County, like Butler County a Class 2A squad, improved to 6-0 after Friday night’s 39-22 victory over Edmonson County.

That’s enough. I’ll be writing in the morning and then covering the WKU game on Saturday afternoon.
