MEANWHILE, FROM LEXINGTON …/Ballard repeats as KHSAA state softball champion; Whitley County edges Shelby County, 2-1, in state baseball title tilt

Congrats are in order for the Whitley County High School baseball team, which slipped past Shelby County 2-1 on Saturday night in the KHSAA state championship game at UK’s Kentucky Proud Park in Lexington.

Whitley County, which eliminated KHSAA 4th Region champion South Warren in quarterfinal play, went on to defeat Henderson County 2-1 in the state semifinals on Friday night, in the late semifinal game at KPP. Shelby County also advanced by a 2-1 score, over Owensboro’s Apollo High School, to reach the championship game.

Whitley County erased a 4-0 deficit to eliminate South Warren, 7-4, in quarterfinal play last Saturday at Counter Clocks Field in Lexington.

In softball, No. 1-ranked Ballard High School, the defending state champion, did it again by drubbing Henderson County 12-4 at UK’s John Cropp Stadium.

The Bruins needed 11 innings to knock off Greenwood star pitcher Kayden Murray and the Lady Gators, 4-1, to get to the semifinals. Ace left-hander Brooke Gray, who is headed to the University of Louisville, guided Ballard to a 4-1 victory over Rowan County in Friday’s semifinals.

That’s a wrap on the KHSAA sports scene for the 2022-23 school year, but there are 7-on-7 tournaments all over the place, and I’ll be gearing up for high school football come August. Thanks for reading.
