DRAGONS CONCLUDE BREAKTHROUGH SEASON WITH 5-6 RECORD
MADISONVILLE, Kentucky — Well, that was fun. Memorable. Rewarding.
I went on the road with the Warren Central High School football team in mid-August, when the Dragons were looking to slay a giant dragon of their own, namely a 61-game losing streak.
MUCH OF THE NIGHT AGAINST THE MAROONS.
They did that, winning 13-0 on Opening Night against Class 5A Bullitt Central in Shepherdsville. The Dragons would later knock off Allen County-Scottsville and Russell County, in KHSAA Class 4A, 2nd District play.
Warren Central coach Mark Nelson’s squad opened the 4A playoffs on Friday night, dropping a 39-12 decision to Madisonville-North Hopkins. The Dragons were not on top of their game, as they were two weeks ago in a 36-21 victory over Class 6A Marshall County, but they kept fighting until the end, losing to the bigger, deeper Maroons.
Warren Central finished its second season under Nelson with a 5-6 record.
SCORED ON A 65-YARD FUMBLE RETURN IN THE SECOND QUARTER.
Madisonville -North Hopkins improved to 7-4 on the season, but the Maroons will have to travel to play unbeaten Warren East (11-0) next week. Warren East crushed Hopkins County Central 46-0 on Friday night.
Because of a scheduling quirk, Warren Central had just three home games this season. A senior class of 12 players met with Nelson and the WCHS coaching staff after the game, for nearly a half hour, while the underclassmen helped load the equipment on the waiting school buses.
It was a rewarding experience, for myself, covering the success story that was the Warren Central Dragons. I’ll have complete coverage on the game on Saturday morning.
Thanks for reading.
