QUICK HITTER STORY, WEEK FIVE/Boyle County motors past BGHS 35-21; Warren Central stuns AC-S, 30-22; South Warren trounces Paducah Tighlman 36-3

GREENWOOD KNOCKS OFF LOGAN COUNTY 28-21; WARREN EAST DRUBS RUSSELL COUNTY 47-12

Week Five of high school football in South Central Kentucky had a handful of seismic moments.

For starters, Warren Central High School made a statement in its KHSAA Class 4A, 2nd District opener, traveling to Allen County-Scottsville and stopping the Patriots 28-22. The Dragons, who snapped a lingering 61-game losing streak on Opening Night — a 13-0 road victory over Bullitt Central — have now evened their record at 2-2.

The Dragons finally will play on the WCHS campus when Warren Central plays host to district rival Russell County (1-4) next week. Because of a scheduling quirk, Warren Central has just three home games this season.

“Really happy for the (Warren Central) kids,” WCHS coach Mark Nelson said via text message late Friday night.

Meanwhile, defending KHSAA Class 5A state champion South Warren made a statement of its own, overpowering visiting Paducah Tighlman 36-3. It was the Spartans’ first home game since last November, when they crushed North Oldham 47-13 in the 5A quarterfinals.

South Warren returns to its home field next Friday, when Louisville’s Central High School makes the two-hour journey south to face the Spartans (2-2).

Bowling Green High School, on the other hand, will have to regroup after its 35-21 loss to defending KHSAA Class 4A champion Boyle County at El Donaldson Stadium. Boyle remained unbeaten in five games while the Purples dipped to 4-1 heading into next week’s road game against Father Ryan Academy in Nashville.

“They’re probably going to win another 4A title,” BGHS coach Mark Spader said when it was over. “For the most part, I was pleased with our offense … you’ve got to take care of the ball (the Purples had two critical turnovers).

“We’ve got to work on the inside of our defense. A game like Boyle is going to tell you a lot about yourselves. We’ve got some things to work on before we go to Nashville.”

Meanwhile, the Warren East Raiders improved to 5-0 in resounding fashion, rolling to a 47-12 victory over KHSAA Class 4A, 2nd District rival Russell County. The Raiders will put their impressive record on the line in next week’s home game against Wayne County (3-1).

Glasgow, however, was knocked from the ranks of the unbeaten on Friday night. Hart County slipped past the visiting Scotties, taking a 38-30 victory in Munfordville. Glasgow (4-1) will try to get back in the win column in next week’s home game against Greenwood (4-1).

Speaking of Greenwood, the Gators extended their winning streak to four games on Friday night, knocking off previously unbeaten Logan County 28-21 at The Swamp.

Metcalfe County improved to 5-0 on the season with a 43-6 victory over Clinton County on Friday night. Franklin-Simpson, meanwhile, rolled past winless Russellville 44-8. The Panthers have had significant turnover after last year’s runner-up finish in the KHSAA Class 1A ranks. Franklin-Simpson (3-2) will play host to district rival Allen County-Scottsville (1-4) next Friday night.
