Quick hitter story/South Warren rolls past Highlands 8-0, reaches quarterfinals of KHSAA state tournament

LEXINGTON — After getting back to my hotel room, I have decided to write in the morning.

It’s late. I’m tired.

South Warren’s softball team extended its winning streak to 29 games, opening KHSAA state tournament play late Saturday night with an impressive 8-0 victory over Highlands at John Cropp Stadium.

South Warren (37-2) will now face Henderson County, a 13-0 winner over Oldham County, in quarterfinal play at 4 p.m. CDT on Friday, also in Lexington.

South pitchers Courtney Norwood and Layla Ogden, middle schoolers completing seventh and eighth grade, respectively, combined on a 3-hitter in the Lady Spartans’ victory over Highlands.

Norwood worked five innings, allowing two hits with four strikeouts. Ogden finished in the circle, recording three strikeouts while giving up one hit in two innings pitched. Kennedy Baioni (12-9) took the loss for Highlands, which finished its season 26-15.

Ogden also had a big day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two doubles, while leadoff batter McLaine Hudson, South’s second baseman, went 2-for-3 while scoring two runs.

South Warren finished the game with 11 hits and didn’t commit an error, defensively.

South Warren coach Kelly Reynolds said the team will return to Bowling Green on Sunday morning, before giving them the rest of the day off.
