BGHS COACH MARK SPADER: ‘IT ALL STARTS WITH THOSE GUYS …’

Bowling Green High School’s football team returned from Fall Break with a mission.

The Purples wanted to establish themselves, as a physical football squad, and on offense, a team that could impose its will upon the opponent.

Exhibit A, Bowling Green’s 45-7 victory over crosstown rival Greenwood on Friday night, a dominant performance that sets up next week’s game for a district championship against Grayson County at the BGHS Stadium.

Senior running back Nick Graham started fast, behind a grinding offensive line, while scoring four first-half touchdowns for the Purples. Bowling Green ensured a KHSAA-mandated running clock before halftime, on Izek Reed’s 30-yard interception return for a touchdown in the final minute of the first half.

Bowling Green improved to 4-4 overall and 3-0 in the KHSAA’s Class 5A, 2nd District, while the Gators fell to 2-6 and 1-3, respectively.

Greenwood High School held a solemn ceremony, before the game, to honor the late Tel Tel Long, the former Gators football and track and field standout who died in July in a lakeside drowning.

Bowling Green is now 37-0, all time, against the Gators, who took the Purples to the wire before falling, 17-14, last year on Oliver Gonzales’ 27-yard field goal as time expired.

There would be no such suspense this time.

BGHS ninth-year head coach Mark Spader credited the Purples’ polished showing on their mental approach, coming out of Fall Break, and their concentration on the task at hand.

“It was night and day, from last year,” Spader said. “We created a lot of adversity, for ourselves, coming out of the break last year … and it showed on the field. We had great practices and it paid off tonight. We haven’t been able to do that, up ’til this point.

“We just haven’t been able to play a complete game.”

That obviously is no longer the case.

Senior BGHS running back Nick Graham set the tone for the game, and after the Purples opened the scoring with 9:30 left in the first half, Spader opted for an onside kick attempt. Freshman placekicker Kip Walden squibbed the kickoff, to his right, and made the recovery himself, giving the Purples excellent field position to take control of the game.

Spader said one of his BGHS assistant coaches noticed the Gators’ front line was dropping back quickly, in their kick return package, and Purples QB Anthony Davis needed just six plays to get his team into the end zone for the second touchdown of the night.

“It’s something we’ve practiced, and Kip is really good at it,” Spader said. “I just felt like to get is going, to get our flow going, in this season … that was important to do. We executed it, and it paid off.”

Again, Graham was the catalyst, breaking off a 29-yard run on a sweep to the right side on the first play from scrimmage. Bowling Green converted a third-and-long situation on Davis’ pass to Bode Knee on a crossing pattern, a play that covered 17 yards and put the Purples in the read zone. Graham scored on the next play, from 5 yards out, and Bowling Green would soon be sporting a 14-0 lead.

That was the turning point of the game, in the estimation of first-year Greenwood head coach Tony Adams.

“The onside kick, that was kind of the dealbreaker,” Adams said. “We needed something good to happen, early, and we’ve seen on film that their offensive line has gotten better all season. We’ve had to mix and match some kids, defensively, because of injuries, but that isn’t an excuse.

“(Bowling Green) did what they do, and we couldn’t stop it.”

Meanwhile, the Purples were rolling with the momentum.

A sack by junior BGHS defensive tackle Zhy’ell Byars stopped the Gators in their next series, and Greenwood’s problems in the kicking game left the Purples at midfield late in the first quarter.

This time, BGHS quarterback Anthony Davis found his brother, senior wideout Arlando Davis, for a 15-yard gain before Nick Graham plowed into the end zone on a 9-yard touchdown run. It was 21-0 and there was still 90 seconds left in the first quarter.

Bowling Green’s Jett Reynolds, a special-teams standout, reeled off a 30-yard punt return, putting the Purples in position for their fourth touchdown of the night. Sophomore wideout Ayden Wickware got the Purples back in the red zone with a 21-yard gain on a reverse, and two plays later, Graham powered through the line for a 1-yard TD, his fourth score of the night.

“All of this goes back to practice, how we prepared for this game,” Graham said. “The big guys up front, they did their job …”

That they did.

The Purples kept moving the chains behind senior tackle Brooks Nuckols, junior tackle Lelan Carpenter, senior guards Cristian Orellena Hernandez and Keaton Vinegar, along with senior center Mason Dew, and key backup Taiyon Parker, which kept the Greenwood defense on its heels.

“They’ve done a great job,” BGHS coach Mark Spader said. “It all starts with those guys …”

Bowling Green’s Izek Reed intercepted a pass in the flat from Gators QB Tyson Howell, and he weaved through a handful of Greenwood players before scoring on a 30-yard return, extending the Purples’ lead to 35-0.

Bowling Green would get in the end zone one last time, before the half, after a juggling catch by Arlando Davis covered 57 yards while putting the Purples in the red zone one last time. From there, Davis broke free on a bootleg and found senior tight end Reid Gathright for an 8-yard TD pass, making it 42-0 at the break.

Bowling Green’s Kip Walden kicked a 32-yard field goal in the third quarter, and Greenwood avoided the shutout when Howell got the ball to teammate Caide Webb on a fourth-down pass that covered five yards for a touchdown.

Bowling Green’s Nick Graham finished the night with 12 carries for 94 yards and all four of his first-half touchdowns. Greenwood finished the night with just 118 yards in total offense.

While Bowling Green awaits Grayson County, for a game that will decide district seeding for the KHSAA Class 5A playoffs, Greenwood will return to The Swamp to square off with unbeaten East Robertson High School, from Cross Plains, Tennessee. East Robertson improved to 8-0 overall with a 49-0 rout of Houston County on Friday night.

“East Robertson might be the best team we play all year,” Greenwood coach Tony Adams said when it was over. “We’ve got to get back to the practice field and see what we can do.”
